Are Dental Crowns Painful? Answers from a Dental Crown Specialist | Dr Puli Sudhakar MDS

Dental crowns

If you're considering a dental crown to restore a damaged or decayed tooth, it's natural to wonder about the procedure and what to expect. One of the most common questions we hear is: are dental crowns painful? The short answer is no - your dental crown procedure should not be painful. Let's take a closer look at why.

During your crown preparation and placement appointments, your comfort is our top priority. We use the latest techniques and technology to ensure a smooth, pain-free experience from start to finish. Before we begin any work, the treatment area will be completely numbed with local anesthesia. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but you should not feel any pain. If at any point you do experience discomfort, let us know right away so we can adjust the anesthesia.

It's important to note that some sensitivity after dental crown placement is normal. As the local anesthesia wears off, you may notice the crowned tooth and surrounding area feel more sensitive to hot, cold, or pressure. This is temporary and should subside within a few days to a couple of weeks as your mouth adjusts to the new restoration. In the meantime, we recommend avoiding very hot or cold foods and drinks, and chewing on the opposite side if possible.

So, while some post-procedure sensitivity is common, prolonged or severe pain is not. If you experience throbbing pain or discomfort that disrupts your sleep or daily activities, contact us right away so we can evaluate the issue and provide relief. In most cases, persistent pain indicates an underlying problem like tooth decay or gum inflammation that needs to be addressed.

At Smile Dental and Implant Centre, our experienced team of dental crown specialists Dr Puli Sudhakar, MDS uses advanced 3D imaging, durable ceramic materials, and precision techniques to create and place crowns that look, feel, and function like your natural teeth - without the pain. We're committed to making your crown experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible, with amenities like pillows, blankets, and soothing music to help you relax. If you're feeling anxious, we also offer sedation options to help you feel at ease.
